"Since the dawn of mankind, no flower has been so loved, so revered, so renowned, or so admired as the rose. It is older than the human hands that first drew pictures of it, cared for it, and instilled it in legend and lore." Brooke Rea Chapman

About the artist

Brooke Rea Chapman  ·  American, 20th / 21st century

This body of work follows a single obsession: the rose, seen at every distance. Some paintings hold to the flower's realism, catching petal edges in light, the quiet depth of a white bloom. Others let the structure dissolve into planes of color and movement. Together they trace a continuous question about where observation ends and feeling begins.

Chapman trained at Bard College and the University of New Mexico before building a career in the Hamptons of Long Island, where she exhibited widely from 1991 to 1999. Her work appeared at Vered Gallery in East Hampton, Mark Humphrey Gallery in Southampton, and Hubert Gallery on Madison Avenue in New York City.

She moved to California in 2000, then to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, before settling in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she continues to paint.

Chapman's solo exhibition The Red Studio was held at Molloy College Art Gallery in Rockville Centre, NY in 1997.
